A high school student in Kentucky is XDY Exchangedead after being hit by a school bus on Tuesday morning.
The incident happened in Winchester, Kentucky, a suburb southwest of Lexington. According to a press release from Clark County Public Schools, emergency crews were called to the site of the incident on Tuesday morning.
Crews arrived at the scene at the intersection of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Ironworks Road after a Clark County school bus struck and killed a pedestrian, the Clark County Coroner told USA TODAY.
In a statement from Clark County Public Schools, officials confirmed the victim was a freshman at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester. In a press release shared with USA TODAY, the county coroner’s office said the 15-year-old girl was hit by the bus while she was trying to cross the parkway.
As news of the death spread across the state, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear gave his condolences in a social media post.
“My heart aches for the family and friends of this precious child lost in this tragedy,” Beshear said in the post.
In the press release from Clark County Public Schools, Superintendent Dustin Howard expressed his sadness in reaction to Tuesday’s morning incident.
“The Clark County Public Schools family is heartbroken today,” Howard said.
